COUNCIL bosses have begun talks aimed at bringing a hotel to the Cartergate site, pictured, in Grimsby.

As previously reported, the area's largest law firm Wilkin Chapman Grange is to move into new offices which are being created as part of the first phase of the derelict site's regeneration.

That is due to be completed by 2016, and the council is already exploring potential options for the second phase.

Marc Cole, strategic director of place, told yesterday's cabinet meeting that the council had begun to work with potential hotel operators with a view to attracting a hotel development to phase two of the project.

Mr Cole added that design works had been commissioned for the Frederick Ward Way junction, and that an initial draft solution has been prepared.

Councillor Darren Billard (Lab, West Marsh) said: "This is very welcome. Members of the community have long been complaining about the issues created by this derelict wasteland and I'm sure they are going to be very happy that is going to be developed."

Councillor Ray Oxby, portfolio holder for regeneration and skills, said: "This is another piece of the jigsaw of the town centre regeneration. We have seen lots of investment, and it is really encouraging confidence in the town centre."
