DESPITE a full rainbow taking stance over Grimsby, it was all purple and yellow talk at the Old Clee Church Hall as Ukip deputy chairman Neil Hamilton concluded his visit to town with a public meeting.

What was supposed to be a forum for questions and debate initially resembled more of a rally with Mr Hamilton referring to his party as "a sort of peasants' revolt" primed for an inevitable spontaneous uprising.

The meeting, on Wednesday night began with the former Conservative MP outlining some of Ukip's key policy areas and interests, as well as fully endorsing parliamentary candidate Victoria Ayling ahead of next year's general election.

He said: "In Victoria, the people have someone who has been selected to stand and canvass for their votes based purely on merit, unlike the Labour party that wish to put forward an all-female shortlist as a statement."

There was barely a spare chair in sight, with local Ukip councillors Ron Shepherd and John Stockton also in attendance.

A significant chunk of Mr Hamilton's address was geared at reiterating his party's Eurosceptism.

He said: "Why are we renouncing our power in this country? 75 per cent of all new laws which we are governed by are made in Brussels – not Westminster.

"We need to stand up for the rights of British people, the future in this country tied up in the genius of its people. It's business as usual for the Eurocrats. If you're happy being governed by a European elite then that is your choice, but as a believer in democracy – I want to have a say in how this country is governed.

"We want our country back, what our forefathers fought for; Ukip has a supporter in every street in the land, Labour or the Conservatives cannot say that."

Mr Hamilton also said that many are choosing to support Ukip because they "speak the language of ordinary people".

He remains convinced that the party will cause a political earthquake next year and have its first elected MP.

And when he declared "it will be a new day and a new dawn for the town", the room erupted in a rapturous applause.

A resident did ask if, closer to the general election, any other party big-hitters were slated to visit Grimsby but it remains to be seen if Nigel Farage will be gracing North East Lincolnshire with his presence.

Mr Hamilton was questioned on a variety of subjects, two of which were wind turbines and overseas aid.

Talking after a successful public meeting Ms Ayling said: "It went extremely well; residents are bringing up several key issues and what they truly want is to see real change to the town of Great Grimsby to reverse the years of neglect and incompetence that Labour and the Tories have brought about.

"I will be a fearless voice for Great Grimsby if elected and make for a Greater Grimsby."
