IF your thoughts are turning to having a beer this weekend, why not give a local brew a try? Sales of Black and White – the latest tipple to be launched by Lincolnshire brewer Batemans to mark its 140th anniversary – have gone through the roof. In its first month of availability, 51 barrels were sold – 15 of which went to pubs outside the country. And real ale fans are clearly getting a taste for it, as in the third month on sale, Batemans sold 126 barrels, 81 of which were through pub companies outside Lincolnshire. Available solely by cask, Black and White is described as a "dark, rich and creamy beer, brimming with fruity flavours and nutty overtones from the charred black Yorkshire malt". The 3.6 per cent brew is also said to be "an unbelievably full bodied beer, packed with roasted, crunchy biscuit character and subtle hop flavours from the Challenger hops". Stuart Bateman, Managing Director of Batemans Brewery, commented: "We launched a selection of new beers for our anniversary, each offering the customer something different, and Black and White has proved very popular with those looking for something mild and creamy, yet with plenty of flavour. "The sales have rocketed over the last two month, and we are confident they will continue to rise over the summer months." It is recommended to go perfectly with red meat and gravy based dishes such as shepherd's pie, or bangers and mash.
