HERE is disgraced TV presenter Rolf Harris pictured with Grimsby singing legend The Singing Postman. It was taken by former Grimsby Telegraph photographer Ray Corke in London. The Singing Postman, real name Allan Smethurst, was best known for his top 10 sixties hit Hev Yew Got A Loight, Boy? It also won him an Ivor Novello Award for best novelty song of the year. Harris later recorded a cover version without success. The song had a small comeback in 1994, when it was featured on a television commercial for Ovaltine Light. Allan died aged 73 at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in the town on December 22, 2000. He spent the last 20 years of his life at the Salvation Army Hostel in Brighowgate, where he became a familiar face to many. Although he was born in Lancashire, Allan was brought up in Norfolk, and sang his songs in a broad local accent. He had given up his job as postman after 12 years and signed a record deal under the same label as The Beatles.
