Paul Hurst – Grimsby Town were never in for Luton new boy Ricky Miller

PAUL Hurst insists Grimsby Town didn't 'miss out' on Ricky Miller – because he was never interested in the player in the first place.

The former Boston United striker joined Football League-bound Luton this week, having bagged 28 goals on his way to being named as last season's Conference North's Player of the Year.

Town were credited with an interest in the 25-year-old – even after Hurst moved to quash those rumours – with some now claiming that Town have 'missed out' on the hot-shot striker.

But Hurst insists that simply is not the case.

"Hand on heart, we never made an approach for Ricky," he said.

"His name was put to me by an agent that I know, but that was as far as that conversation went because I wasn't interested.

"It's a great move for Ricky and I've read that Luton are perhaps going to lose Andre Gray to Brentford, so that's more good news for Ricky in a way."

Hurst says Miller's jump to League Two just goes to highlight the strength of the non-league scene.

He added that if clubs can afford to take a 'gamble' on lower-league gems then there are bargains to be had.

"It just goes to show that these players can make the step-up," he continued.

"It's a little bit surprising that he's jumped that far but some clubs, if they've got the finances to do so, will see him as a risk worth taking.

"Peterborough have signed a lot of forwards from the leagues below in the past and some of them have gone on to make good money for the club – at the same time, there are others that don't work out."
