A FESTIVE spectacular was held at the Mariners Rest, in Grimsby, to help children with cancer.

A winter wonderland was created at the pub with snow machines, a nativity scene and father Christmas' grotto.

The event was organised by Kerry Barbour, mum to Jak Barbour, 14, of Hildyard Street, Grimsby, who is on the road to recovery after developing a rare form of cancer of the larynx. He was recently crowned child of courage at the Grimsby Telegraph's Community Awards.

He was receiving treatment at Sheffield Children's Hospital with fellow young local cancer sufferer Lucy Sutton, 7, of Scartho, who has a rare form of bone cancer, and secondary lung cancer.

The money raised by the winter wonderland will help towards the continued care of Jak and Lucy.

Kerry said: "We held a Halloween event at the pub to help Jak and Lucy Sutton, and it was a massive success.

"Following that we were asked by so many people when we were going to do a Christmas event. We had not planned on doing one but because of the response we had, we went ahead and gave it ago.

"We didn't have nearly as much time to plan and organise it as we did for the Halloween one but it has come together fantastically.

"So many people have come forward to help. We asked on Facebook if anyone could help us with some Christmassy bits and the response was amazing.

"I swear we have more trees than Weelsby Woods! And we had more baubles than we knew what to do with!

"We are so thankful for the support of the pub and Mark Watson, the landlord. Everyone who has helped has just been ace, thank you.

"It has not been as busy as the Halloween event but we have still seen lots of children. Seeing their faces light up when they enter the winter wonderland and when they meet Santa is just amazing.

"Seeing so many people that have come down not only to see Santa but to help out such a great cause, too, is just fantastic."

Landlord Mark said: "When they asked me if they could use the pub for the Halloween event I was more than happy to help them and I was just as happy to let them use the pub again for the Christmas event.

"It's for such a good cause and it helps really raise awareness of cancer. Nobody can comprehend what it must be like for the families affected by it. They have done a fantastic job decorating it and I am sure all the kids who have seen it have loved it."

Enjoying the winter wonderland were Harlie Jeakins, 6, and Gracie May, 4.

Harlie said: "It's great, it is really fun. Seeing Santa was the best bit, I asked him for a tablet, Power Rangers as well as a hat, scarf and gloves.

Gracie said: "I loved seeing Father Christmas, he was really good. I really liked the snow too.

"I asked him for a dolly and a plastic phone too."
