More than half of pupils in North East Lincolnshire attend secondary schools which are not yet 'good', a new report has revealed. Ofsted has today published its first ever review of education standards in the Yorkshire and Humber region, showing there are unacceptably large variations in school performance across local authority areas. The Annual Report 2012/13 reveals that only 41 per cent of students attend 'good' or better secondary schools in North East Lincolnshire, with the area ranked 145th out of 150 local authorities. Primary schools fare better with 68 per cent of pupils attending 'good' or better schools in the borough. In neighbouring Lincolnshire, the figures stand at 81 per cent for primaries and 78 per cent for secondaries. Meanwhile, in 2012, pupils' attainment levels at the end of Key Stage 2 in the Yorkshire and Humber region were the lowest in England. Pupils from poorer backgrounds are highlighted as being the worst served of all. Last year, the attainment gap for children eligible for free school meals in North East Lincolnshire was 10 per cent or more above the national figure at the end of secondary school. Attendance rates are also a cause for concern with children in the region likely to have lost more school days through absence than in most other areas of the country. Nick Hudson, Ofsted Regional Director for the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside, said: "While there are signs of improvement for primary schools in the North East and pockets of high performance for secondary schools across the region, overall there is too much variation. "The contrast in education standards across the region is stark. Pupils' attendance is a real cause for concern and most worryingly, children on free school meals are not getting the education they deserve. These children are being left behind. This cannot be right given the extra funding disadvantaged children receive. "That is why as Regional Director I am determined to focus minds through our inspection and improvement work. Ofsted inspectors will monitor, challenge and support those institutions that are underperforming and we will not walk away until education standards improve across the region."What do you think?
