STREET sweeping was put on hold as the Tidy Up Together crews helped tackle the aftermath of last Thursday's tidal surge.

The tidal surge saw a wide range of organisations pulling together to keep the community safe and to reduce damage caused.

Fortunately the tidal surge did not pose as much of a risk as first thought in a lot of areas of the borough but nevertheless the council has been working to clear the mess left behind.

The council removed more than ten tonnes of debris from the beach area of Cleethorpes.

A spokesperson for the council said: "The Tidy Up Together crew members supported the flood emergency, along with street cleansing, grounds and community pride teams.

"They spent time filling sand bags as well as transporting them to the Fitties. They also assisted the police with residents, helping to shepherd them to buses for them to be moved to Grimsby Resource Centre.

"The teams filled in excess of 2,000 sand bags by hand and helped distribute them around the resort. The following day's tidy up of the beach was also an exhaustive full day removing in excess of ten tonnes of debris from the beach. They also collected steps that had been washed away and the debris left by the damage caused to the big wheel and helter-skelter on the beach."

Meanwhile, the Tidy Up Together Campaign is set to restart in the next few days in the South Ward of the borough.

They have just completed the clean-up of the Yarborough ward clearing in excess of 40 tonnes of waste in just over a week and a half.

The campaign so far has seen 31.24 tonnes of waste removed from Humberston and New Waltham, 19.43 tonnes from Waltham, 42.79 tonnes from rural areas, 3.40 tonnes from Immingham, 36.50 tonnes from Freshney, and 53.00 tonnes from West Marsh.

The crews will begin their clean-up in the South Ward, in the Littlefield Lane area of Grimsby, this week, before sweeping across the Grange estate and completing the ward on the the Nunsthorpe estate.
