Further deterioration 'cannot be ruled out' at Grimsby Swimming Pool

STRINGENT checks are now being carried out every two weeks "for the foreseeable future" to ensure Scartho Baths is safe for staff and leisure users after September's discovery of asbestos.

Owners North East Lincolnshire Council sealed the building off for three weeks after the potentially lethal dust was found in the main pool hall during a routine asbestos survey.

Now a Freedom Of Information request has revealed the council "cannot rule out" further deterioration and is now actively checking for signs that the site may be unsafe.

The authority's response to the FOI request reveals that asbestos surveys were carried out on all leisure buildings by specialist contractors Redhills Ltd, upon the building's return to the council at the end of the SLM contract on April 1 this year.

At the time, some leisure users questioned the validity of the council's claims that asbestos had been found, especially since the building is due to be demolished in less than two years' time.

But the authority's response confirms asbestos is present "in various locations within Grimsby Swimming Pool".

The council's feedback officer said: "Some of the dust found was as a result of the retraction of building materials, which resulted in a loose fitting and friction that released dust. This issue has now been resolved.

"As further deterioration and wear and tear cannot be ruled out, as a precautionary measure air tests will continue to take place on a 14 day cycle."

The officer continued: "Asbestos was previously identified in all leisure buildings (around 2000 to 2001) and survey information was at that time presented to SLM Ltd.

"Surveys are updated to ensure asbestos remains undisturbed and hasn't deteriorated.

"Proper risk control measures are in place in respect of all locations.

"It should be noted that asbestos was used commonly in the early 1960s when Grimsby Swimming Pool was constructed."

The council said it takes its responsibility for health and safety "very seriously" and will continue to work with Lincs Inspire to ensure all leisure facilities are closely monitored and regularly inspected to ensure asbestos presence is not a risk to users or staff.

Sue Wells, NELC's head of culture, leisure and sport, said: "We have been undertaking the tests every fortnight since the recent closure and, to date, all tests have come back clear.

"This is very much a precautionary measure to make sure the facility continues to be safe to use."
