THE family of a former Tetney councillor were given the honour of illuminating the village for the festive season

Chris Wood's widow, Linda, and two of their grandchildren, Ollie, 12, and Abbie Clorley, 8, were invited to switch on the Christmas lights in the village.

A competition is usually held to decide which pupil at Tetney Primary School should turn on the lights.

But this year, parish councillors decided to invite the family of late Grimsby Town supporter Chris, who passed away suddenly in June, aged 63.

Linda, who also has a third grandson, Oscar Wood, seven months, said: "It's a huge honour to be invited to turn on the lights and Chris would have been very proud that we have been asked.

"It's lovely seeing the lights on each December and they really set the tone for Christmas in the village."

Rather than a traditional spruce tree, the lights in Tetney adorn a horse chestnut which was planted by a villager more than 100 years ago.

Pupils from the primary school sang carols around the tree on Saturday evening before the lights were switched on and residents then headed to the village hall for a Christmas fair.

Parish council clerk Susan Booth added: "This is one of the biggest events of the year in Tetney and it always brings everybody together."

Vice-chairman Steve McMillan added: "It's very important to us because the village unites and there's a real sense of community.

"It's a wonderful way to celebrate the start of Christmas."

There were 17 stalls at the fair, all of them taken up by community groups in the village and local crafters.

Mum-of-three Jane Bojen, from Tetney, was selling sweet treats in aid of A&M's Dance School, which rehearses in the village hall.

She said: "We're raising money to buy costumes for the children to wear in a circus-themed show in March.

"Everybody enjoys the fair and light switch-on because there's such a good atmosphere."

Lucie Clements is chair of the committee of Tetney Pre-school Playgroup, a registered charity.

She said: "The fair is really good because all of the groups here are raising money for their own projects.

"We're supplying all the refreshments and everything we raise will go to providing equipment and resources for the pre-school.

"A lot of community events like this have fallen by the wayside over the years but this one has stood strong and everybody really enjoys it."

Travelling from New Waltham to enjoy the festive fun were Charlotte Smith and daughters Chloe, 9, and Isabelle, 6.

Chloe said: "It's been fun looking round all the stalls."
