OFSTED has declared Tollbar Academy as a "beacon of excellence" for secondary schools.

The Government's School Inspection Team judged the academy to be outstanding for the third time in more than five years.

The report highlighted "inspirational vision" for the development of the academy and for the development of education in the wider local community.

Inspectors said "excellent leadership combined with extremely skilled and dedicated teaching have ensured that the school's high performance has been sustained".

The academy has earned an outstanding rating in all five inspection categories – overall effectiveness, achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, and leadership and management – following an inspection two weeks ago.

The good news, released yesterday, came as sporting superstar Colin Jackson inspired youngsters at Tollbar with stories of his achievements.

The Olympic 110m hurdler, who became World Champion three times during his career, toured Tollbar's sports facilities and watched a PE demonstration.

He then made a speech to students before handing out trophies at the school's presentation evening at Grimsby Auditorium.

Tollbar is the only secondary academy in the region so far to have received an outstanding rating under the new, more rigorous Ofsted regulations, which came into force on September 1.

Inspections now place even greater weight on quality of teaching, and only schools who receive an Outstanding judgement in this category can then go on to secure an outstanding rating overall.

The report read: "High-quality teaching accelerates students' progress to well beyond what is usually seen.

"Sustained high-quality teaching over time has a significant impact on students' confidence, attitudes and their achievement."

Inspectors found that 85 per cent of lessons observed were either good or outstanding.

"Teachers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic," they wrote.

"They are determined to secure the best outcomes for students. Support staff make an invaluable contribution to the achievement and well-being of students."

Principal Stephen Moon said: "We are extremely proud of this report. It is an affirmation of the tremendous hard work and dedication of every single student and member of staff at Tollbar Academy.

"We were first declared outstanding in 2008, and we have focussed tirelessly on the professional development of staff, which is central to maintaining our high-quality teaching, outstanding pastoral support and successful leadership. The work continues and we are very happy that it has been recognised."

Tollbar Family of Academies chief executive David Hampson said: "I am immensely proud of the staff at Tollbar for their professionalism and commitment, which is second to none, and which has once again ensured Tollbar Academy has achieved an outstanding grading from Ofsted.

"This is an amazing achievement given firstly, the size of this 11-18 academy and secondly, that the inspection was carried out under the much more demanding September 2013 Ofsted inspection criteria.

"As the inspectors reported, this is not just excellent news for the quality of education received by the students at Tollbar, but for the area as a whole, particularly as Tollbar is the keystone of Tollbar Multi-Academy Trust."

Philip Bond, Chair of Governors, added: "As both Chair of Tollbar Academy Governors and of Tollbar Family of Academies, I am delighted with the excellent report, almost certainly one of the best and most congratulatory under the new OFsted regime on a national setting.

"To receive the accolades we do is a tremendous compliment to everyone associated with the academy."
