A REQUEST for the issue of speed cameras to be discussed as an urgent item at a scrutiny meeting was rejected. Councillor Philip Jackson (Con, Waltham) asked for the topic to be added to the agenda at the latest meeting of the regeneration, housing and environment scrutiny panel. The move came in the wake of the public outcry to the speed cameras imposing the controversial 30mph limit on the Peaks Parkway. However, acting chairman of the panel, Councillor Matthew Patrick (Lab, Heneage) said he could not accept the matter as an item of urgent business as there was no time constraint on the issue. He added that the petition calling for the speed cameras to be removed would come back to the committee at a later date. When Councillor Jackson asked if a special meeting would be called to debate the issue, council leader Chris Shaw said it would if six councillors formally requested it. To which Councillor Jackson replied: "I wouldn't want to be accused of wasting tax payers' money by calling a special full council meeting for just one item."
