FORMER Grimsby Town loanee Steve Kabba has spoken of his 'devastation' at being force to retire from the game at the age of 32. Kabba made 13 appearances for the Mariners during a successful loan spell in 2002, scoring six goals. Such was the success of his temporary move from Crystal Palace, the Grimsby Telegraph even ran a 'Stay Steve' campaign to try and encourage the striker to make his stay permanent. However, despite becoming something of a cult hero with fans, seven days after leaving the Mariners, Kabba sealed a £250,000 move to Sheffield United. But now, following spells at Watford, Blackpool and Brentford, the Londoner has been forced to hang up his boots after suffering a series of injuries. He tweeted this morning: "Morning world – got some devastating news earlier this week. The top surgeon in the UK told me I have to retire. Hard to digest. "After five operations and over two years of grafting to get healthy with little success and still having symptoms, I guess it's the right decision. "Just want to thank the fans of all the teams I've played for. You're all brilliant. "Taken away some great memories from the game I love. Don't take it for granted young guns it will go quick. Enjoy and be grateful daily. "To hear those words you have to retire still not registered. No professional athlete wants to hear that. Especially if you love the game."
