GRIMSBY Town's new director insists it is 'absolutely essential' that the club relocates to a new ground.
Philip Day, a former senior partner at Grimsby's Wilkin Chapman Grange solicitors, will be officially welcomed on to the Mariners' board at today's AGM.
A lifelong Town fan, Day is an experienced commercial property lawyer and believes his expertise will assist the club's plans to build a new stadium on land off Peaks Parkway.
And in the week that saw the club granted a further 12 months to explore the viability of that site, Day believes he has the skills to help overcome whatever problems lie ahead.
"I'm absolutely delighted to be asked to be on the board and to do all I can to help the club move forward," he told the Telegraph.
"There will, no doubt, be all sorts of problems that arise when it comes to making sure that we get the site and all the necessary agreements with the council that will need to be put in place.
"So I can use all my skills in those areas, advise the board and hopefully help keep moving the project forward. As a fan, I think it's critical that the club relocates because the facilities at Blundell Park – as much as we all love it – are poor and the fans deserve better.
"When looking at the business model, relocation is absolutely essential because the club simply cannot move forward in these surroundings.
"I've got so many happy memories of watching games at Blundell Park, but you've got to accept that, in modern football, you've got to adapt and have a modern stadium that generates money for the club."
