PAUL Hurst dedicated Grimsby Town's FA Cup derby victory over Scunthorpe United to the 'incredible' fans – saying 'that one's for you!'

The Town boss hailed the character and belief of his side after the hard-fought 2-1 victory over their arch rivals, thanks to goals from Lenell John-Lewis and Clayton McDonald.

The powerful striker put the Mariners ahead within ten minutes, before the Iron later hit back just seconds into the second half.

But with a place in the second round, and a home tie with Northampton Town up for grabs, McDonald rose highest to nod home from Scott Kerr's excellent free-kick to send the travelling army of almost 2,000 fans into dreamland.

After the final whistle, Hurst said: "I'm delighted for the players, but I'm also delighted for those fans who travelled to support us. They were fantastic and have showed, over two games against Scunthorpe, just what it means to them.

"There's a lot been said about things that haven't gone for Grimsby in recent years, but this is for the fans – it was nice to send them home happy.

"It was a special night for us and the fans were incredible again. They've paid their money to come and support us and made for a fantastic atmosphere.

"That result was a reward for those that have followed us throughout the not-so-good times."

Hurst acknowledges that his side were forced to soak up spells of pressure from their hosts, but insists that Brian Laws' team never truly hurt them

He added: "I thought we started the game really well and were unlucky not to score just before we did.

"But then in the second half, you almost feel like you've wasted your breath because within seconds of kicking-off again, they score.

"But we showed great character to come back.

"I'd been saying to Clayton that, given his size, he should score more than he does, so it was great to see him pop up with one!

"They had spells but didn't really hurt us in truth.

"It was balls into the box from deep that we had to contend with, which we did well and it was fantastic to get the result."
