EXCITING new plans for the transformation of Grimsby town centre have been unveiled.
As work continues on the £6-million Green Transport project, these artist's impressions show how the town's Riverhead Square will look when the work is completed.
A planning application has been submitted for a passenger transport super-stop to be constructed on the site, which will include an indoor waiting area with cafe and toilet facilities and, for the first time in the town, real-time bus information displayed to the travelling public.
Unlike previous artist's impressions of the proposed development, the latest versions do not include a proposed extension to Freshney Place shopping centre, and instead show a temporary landscaped public open space in its place.
However, Freshney Place insists it still intends to expand onto the Riverhead Square site, with the super-stop being incorporated into the expansion.
In the meantime an interim standalone super-stop and temporary public space will be created.
The development of the Riverhead area is part of the wider works in the town centre made possible through the government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF).
Last year the project was awarded £4.3m from the fund. And with further contributions from the council and other partner organisations, the value of the project is more than £6-million – one of the largest schemes the town has seen since the pedestrianisation of Victoria Street.
Councillor Chris Shaw, leader of the council and portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "The transformation of Grimsby town centre is really underway and starting to take shape on the ground.
"From Riverhead Square to Station Approach the town is being developed to encourage investment, create new jobs and improve access to public transport.
"Other elements of the LSTF projects are promoting health and well-being through increased opportunities for walking and cycling. And help is being given to those who have difficulties finding or keeping a job because of problems travelling to work."
You can find out more by visiting the Green Transport information stand which will be at Riverhead Square on September 26, October 1, 10, 15, 24, and 29.
