FRESHNEY Place Shopping Centre has applied for planning permission to expand its retail offering.
If approved, the move will create an extra 12,560 sq ft of retail space.
The development will involve an extension onto Baxtergate and an expansion of existing storage areas.
It comes as the council unveiled plans to create a temporary public space on Riverhead Square which had been earmarked for an extension of the shopping centre.
However, a spokeswoman for Freshney Place said the Baxtergate extension was part of a phased expansion and that it still intended to develop on the Riverhead in the long-term.
Centre director Amanda Austin said: "The application and planned works aim to provide a larger, more modern retail space which is more desirable for today's retailers and will offer our shoppers an improved and more diverse retail mix, along with improving the shopping environment throughout Freshney Place.
"This planned investment into the shopping centre is a reflection of our dedication and commitment to improve our customer offer and support the retail offer across Grimsby town centre as a whole.
"The centre are currently in negotiation with national retailers about opportunities at Freshney Place and further information will be supplied once confirmed."Follow us on Facebook and Twitter
