DARING children tested their taste buds in a bushtucker trial – right here in Grimsby.
Blindfolded youngsters tried a variety of unusual foods – such as lychee – in an attempt to get them trying a variety of healthy produce.
The trial, at Grimsby Minster's Family Fun Day, was set up by Pam Moore, from Food For Fitness, and she told how one contestant thought the lychee fruit was an eyeball.
"Children have been really excited about trying different foods and they told me they have all tasted something different – and some even enjoyed it," she said.
"With their blindfold on, it gives them the full taste sensation. The trial consisted of dates, pumpkin seeds and pomegranate seeds."
Keenan Stowers, 7, and Shannon Stowers, 12, tested lychee and noodles.
Shannon, from Grimsby, said: "I didn't like them because I couldn't see what I was eating.
"But the fruit wasn't that bad – I quite enjoyed it.
"I have never done anything like this before and it was fun but scary at the same time."
Her mum, Marie Riches, added: "Shannon hasn't been eating her fruit and vegetables and hopefully this might get her trying them more."
Many families turned up to enjoy the event, which also included a performance from the Tell Tale Hearts Theatre Company as well as face painting, crafts, competitions and more.
It was also attended by many local organisations, including Specialist Health Promotion, Grimsby In Bloom, The Culture House, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Green Futures.
The Green Futures stall displayed a selection of their locally grown produce such as the hottest chillies in the world and a huge pumpkin.
Sean Atkinson, from Green Futures, said: "It has been an excellent day and one person even dared to try our hottest chillies – which are 1.4 million scovilles. They had to drink two glasses of milk afterwards!
"It has been great for all the family, with children learning about how to grow their own veg.
"It's nice to see such an interest in growing your own vegetables. We offer fresh vegetable boxes from £5, which contain a variety of seasonal produce."
