THE page has turned for a village's traditional red telephone box – it has a new lease of life as a book swap shop.
After being adopted by Ashby-cum-Fenby Parish Council in 2009, there were many ideas aired about what to do with it.
There were plans to use it as a big Christmas decoration during the holidays, or a sheltered noticeboard, but the council's chairman, Cherryanne Pearson, suggested it was turned into a book swap shop... and it took off.
The council renovated the iconic red box by painting it and adding space for books that all the villagers can share.
The scheme has been in operation for a few months now, and has gone down well with the villagers.
Books are being shared by residents of all ages, with some reading books they would never have thought of looking at.
Cherryanne said: "It's been great for the village.
"I've put books in there and I'm glad its going down so well and encouraging reading in the area.
"People are using it and I hope they continue to do so.
"It's a lovely addition to the area. The lady who lives across from it has been keeping an eye on it for us, so it's got the backing of all of Ashby-cum-Fenby."
Parish clerk Kim Kirkham said: "I've used it; I've got a Harry Potter book for my son and a Jeremy Clarkson book for my husband – however, as it turns out, that was one we had previously put in there so I was just bringing it back to him!
"We have a village noticeboard in there as well as a newsletter, so you can grab a book while checking what's going on – it's great."
