Crossing is blocking traffic into resort

HERE we have the infamous nose-to-tail traffic that is constantly blocking up the main road through Cleethorpes.

Why? All because of the pedestrian crossing on Alexandra Road, outside the Seaway.

The crossing was placed too near to the roundabout with Sea Road.

As such, cars leaving the roundabout have to stop within a few feet at the zebra crossing, to allow the many tourists to cross the busy road.

They cannot foresee that a pedestrian will step on to the crossing before they start to go round the roundabout, so what happens is all the cars have to stop behind, blocking the roundabout so that traffic from Sea Road and the Market Place are also blocked from moving.

The crossing should be controlled by lights but is not. North East Lincolnshire Council need to get a move on to install lights to at least allow traffic to move freely most of the time.

Every car, bus, taxi and lorry driver must be at screaming point because of this absurd situation where everything comes to a stop if only one pedestrian steps on it.

This is one of the busiest roads in the area and is especially annoying.

Name and address supplied.

The Telegraph says

It was as a result of a study that NELC said a need was identified "for a controlled crossing for pedestrians in the vicinity of the Seaway restaurant where pedestrians often failed to find adequate gaps in the traffic to cross safely".

At the time, the council also said that "Many people ask for zebra crossings to be changed to puffin crossings, believing them to be safer. Recent research has, however, shown that the safety record of both types is very similar and that, in some cases, zebra crossings are safer."

If the safety records are similar, would a puffin crossing, where lights are used to stop traffic, not be preferable to ensure that traffic flow is not affected? Email viewpoint@grimsbytelegraph.co.uk
