A DRUM containing acid was washed ashore on the east coast. Coastguards cordoned off a stretch of the beach and council officials removed the hazardous chemical. A walker raised the alarm when the drum was spotted floating in the water at about 8pm on Sunday at Mablethorpe. A coastguard spokeswoman said: "It was a five gallon drum, which was about one-third full of acid. It was sealed and not leaking, but the fire service and coastguards at Mablethorpe took it higher up the beach and it has been disposed of by the local council." The area of the beach was sealed off for more than two hours. The spokeswoman said it was difficult to prove where it came from. She added: "It may have come from a vessel."
