Grimsby Town bosses impressed by Youth-team talents

YOUNG guns Paul Walker and Tom Charlesworth could get another chance to shine for Grimsby Town's first-team at Brigg tonight.

The Youth-teamers made the step up to become second-year pros this summer, and have continued that progression with call-ups to the first-team for the early friendlies.

Midfielder Charlesworth appeared off the bench against Cleethorpes Town and Winterton Rangers, while defender Walker started the second of those matches.

Co-manager Paul Hurst admits he has been impressed by the pair's impact and attitude to date.

He told Young Stars: "Paul certainly did well on Friday and there's every chance he will get some more games with us – he will probably be involved at Brigg tonight.

"He trained with us for the couple of days leading up to the Winterton match.

"He's a good size, athletic, competitive and a strong runner. He can play centre-half and that's where they'll probably look to play him in the Youth team.

"For us at the moment, though, if he was going to play then it would be at right-back.

"A key thing is getting to know that position, and realising that where his pace can get him out of trouble at times in the Youth team, at first-team level, you can get caught out.

"He's a second-year Youth team player and what we've seen, albeit in a short space of time, we've liked.

"If we can get a couple of those lads to be on the fringes and perhaps push to be part of the squad on a more regular basis, that would be great.

"I'm not saying we're not going to bring anyone new in to cover at full-back.

"But if Paul can take that level of performance into games against better opposition and continue his development, then he's suddenly a much better option for us.

"That would be great financially because we wouldn't have to bring someone else in.

"Then the dilemma is whether you risk starting with that, and if that doesn't quite work out, having to go and get someone and leaving ourselves a bit light in the squad."

On another of Youth-team boss Adam Smith's charges, Hurst added: "Tom Charlesworth has also come in and done well.

"He's another one who is not frightened to get on the ball and that's what we ask of the young players.

"When you're a young lad you can go into your shell a little bit or you think 'right, I'll show them.'

"At the moment, we're seeing a good attitude from him. On Friday night, initially a couple of his passes went astray and it would have been quite easy for him to go hiding.

"But that wasn't the case. He kept getting on it and I thought he grew into the second half and started to play some really good passes.

"He's got good quality and is another one who is giving us a nudge to say 'don't forget about me'."
