TRIALIST Chris Doig will get another chance to impress Grimsby Town's bosses at Winterton tomorrow evening.
The former Nottingham Forest centre-half has been training with the Mariners this week, and played more than a hour of Tuesday's opening friendly against Cleethorpes Town.
The 32-year-old has an impressive pedigree, having played almost 100 times for Forest and represented Scotland at Under-21 level.
And co-manager Rob Scott admits he and Paul Hurst have been impressed by the defender's attitude and impact.
"I think 'Doigy' showed on Tuesday night what he is about – he's experienced, he's a talker, he's a leader, and he's a good lad," commented the Town boss.
"We'll have to see what happens with that one. He's having the week with us and playing in the two games, and then we'll have a chat.
"No disrespect to the two teams that we're playing this week, but possibly we'd like to have a look at him in a slightly more competitive game.
"That will come down to Doigy and how long before we make an actual decision.
"We're not in the business of messing people about. He's an experienced pro and we will make a decision sooner rather than later.
"We know we need to sign a centre-half and are looking to bring a couple more players in yet.
"But we'll continue to do our business quietly and go under the radar hopefully, and see what comes up."
The other trialist on show at Bradley Community Stadium on Tuesday was 20-year-old former Bolton goalkeeper Tom Turner.
Scott added: "Tom's a big lad and he's got a good stature, but he's got to grow into himself a little bit more, so we'll see."
"He's the same as Doigy – we're not going to mess him about. We've had him in to train and had a look at him in a game, so we'll have a decision to make.
"We'll have to sit down with our goalkeeping coach Steve Croudson and talk about his attributes.
"The goalkeeping position is not an urgent thing but we would like another one if possible. We would like someone to push James McKeown as Greg Fleming did last year.
"We're going to have to go down the route of a young goalkeeper who we can work on and develop."
