THE number of unemployed people in North East Lincolnshire is continuing to fall. The latest figures, released yesterday, show the number of people claiming benefits in the borough has fallen by 575, from 6,770 in May 2012 to 6,195 this year. The number of 18 to 24-year-olds making claims has also fallen. In May last year 1,995 youths were claiming in the area, compared to 1,650 in May this year. The number of young people making long-term claims (for 12 months or more) has also fallen by five, from 315 in May 2012 to 310 in May 2013. However, there has been a slight rise in the total number of claimants on long-term benefits, with the number claiming for 12 months or more increasing from 1,835 in May 2012 to 1,875 in May this year. Employment Minister Mark Hoban said: "I've been to Grimsby and I think there's some really good work being done in Grimsby with local colleges, really good partnership with processing industries and I know we've done really well in North East Lincolnshire on the new enterprise allowance, where we've got a lot of people into work and self employment as a result of that. "My task is to make sure that the programmes we've got, like the Work Programme, delivers results rather than a raft of initiatives that are never going to work." In the wider Yorkshire and Humberside region, unemployment has fallen by 2,000 in the three months to April. The Office for National Statistics showed that a total of 244,000 people were unemployed in the region between February and April. Total pay increased by 1.3 per cent in the year to April, compared with the previous month's revised figure of 0.6 per cent. Average total pay, including bonuses, is now £484 a week, falling to £447 without bonuses.
