Five dead in horror crash: A18 Barton Street dubbed 'the most dangerous bit of road in England'

THE A18 Barton Street has been dubbed one of Britain's most dangerous roads.

It featured in a BBC documentary entitled Britain's Killer Roads, in 2011.

There have been more than 20 collisions along the stretch in the last three years, many of them at junctions.

Moves are already underway to reduce the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph as part of North East Lincolnshire Council's review of speed limits in the area – although there is no suggestion that speed was a factor in yesterday's tragedy.

The plan is soon to go out to public consultation.

Meanwhile, landowner Stuart Creese, who has lived next to the road since 1970, when it was a B road, says he has kept a log of every incident.

He said: "There is not a straight bit of road along it for anyone to overtake safely.

"When you see all the Sunday cyclists out, people are pulling out to overtake but where can they pass safely?

"We have all the big lorries going between Immingham and Boston, and there is nowhere safe to pass on this stretch.

"In my opinion, it is the most dangerous bit of road in England.

"I would like to see somebody make a decision to make it wider, but to me, it seems lives are cheaper than the money it would cost."

The ten-mile stretch between the Laceby roundabout and where the road links with the A16 at Ludborough was described as 25 times more dangerous than the average British motorway by the documentary makers.

Mum-of-three Kay Wells, was killed in April last year when she lost control on a bend between the B1203 Ashby Hill junction and the Waltham Road junction.

Her four-year-old daughter, who was in the car with her, survived.

Eight months later, in December, 64-year-old cyclist Graeme Walton, of Melton Ross, died when he was in collision with a lorry at Barnoldby-le-Beck.

In July, 2011, motorcyclist Nikki Hullett, 24, of Wootton, was killed at the junction with the A1173 Riby Road.

In November 2009, ConocoPhillips worker Timothy Johnson, 48, was killed in a head-on crash on the road as he was travelling to work at 6.30am.

And earlier that year, in March, Richard Bellamy, 21, of Highfields, North Thoresby, died in a head-on collision on the dual carriageway stretch of the A18 near Riby Crossroads, when PR consultant Eliza Risk's Hyundai Getz drifted in front of his car.

Miss Risk, 28, of Leeds, was also killed.

Adam Nurse, 18, died in September, 2008. He was travelling at 50mph when he lost control of his Vauxhall Astra, near Laceby, colliding with a tree in heavy rain.

His dad Nigel Nurse, has previously told the Telegraph: "The road is dangerous – not the drivers. My son was going at a reasonable speed and there were no crash barriers.

"The surface was not grippy enough in bad weather conditions and there are not enough road markings on the narrow road.

"Something needs to be done about this road, and it should not be patched up where accidents have happened – it needs to be improved along the whole stretch. I felt like my life ended on that day."

He agreed with comments made on the programme that a large section of the road does not have enough grip, is too narrow and does not have sufficient markings.

In 2009, improvements were made to the road, which comes under the management of both North East Lincolnshire Council and Lincolnshire County Council as it crosses county boundaries.

Between 2009 and 2011, there were nine reported collisions.

Following yesterday's five tragic deaths, Marc Cole, North East Lincolnshire Council's Strategic Director of Environment, Economy and Housing said: "Our sympathies go out at this time to the families and friends of everyone involved in this accident.

"While it's too early to comment further at this stage as the emergency agencies will obviously be carrying out their investigations into the cause of the collision, we will review any of their findings as appropriate."
