INQUESTS have been opened into the deaths of the two victims of the Great Coates level crossing crash.
Paul Hodge, 47, of Sutcliffe Avenue, Grimsby, and David Williams, 40, of Taylor Street, Cleethorpes, both worked on Immingham Docks de-waxing cars, and were on their way home when their car was hit by a train.
The inquests were opened by North Lincolnshire and Grimsby Coroner Paul Kelly.
He heard that both men had been positively identified, and initial post mortem examination reports were read.
Mr Hodge died from head injuries and Mr Williams died from multiple injuries, the court was told.
The crash happened at 7.35pm last Tuesday as Mr Hodge drove his Volvo V40 through the village with his workmate as the passenger.
The train remained upright and on the tracks, as reported, and there were no injuries on the train, as all passengers were safely removed from the 7.26pm TransPennine Express service from Cleethorpes to Scunthorpe.
Mr Kelly adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed once the investigation by British Transport Police (BTP) is complete.
A BTP spokesman said a report will be prepared for the inquest and will include more details about the train and the car.
"Our investigation will be conducted jointly with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch," he said.
"We will be checking that the train was operating correctly and there will also be checks made on the car.
"The investigation will also be looking at the barriers on the crossing and CCTV footage from the scene.
"We shall also be talking to witnesses and would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened.
"We have to put a picture together of what happened and send the report to the coroner, who will re-open the inquest either later this year or the start of next year."
He asked any witnesses to contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040, quoting incident number 516 of April 9.
