THEY say the canine is a man's best friend but for this owner his dog is literally a prize possession.

When Colin Rogers, of Grimsby, bought Mason, a Dogue de Bordeaux, from a breeder in Staffordshire, he never expected the attention he receives today.

Mason is not only a runner-up in recent dog shows, but he will now star in a calendar for 2013.

As a proud owner, Colin, 42, started uploading photos of Mason onto Facebook for all his friends to see.

Not long after, and to his surprise, a member of the Dogue de Bordeaux Welfare got in touch and asked if he would enter his dog into a competition to possibly feature in their next calendar.

"I submitted a photograph I took where Mason is looking at himself in the mirror," he said.

"They obviously liked it as he won a place but I still do not know what month he will be.

"Everyone tells me he looks so pretty and I cannot believe it. Dogue de Bordeaux breeds have wrinkly faces, they often get compared to humans as well because of their foreheads and eyebrows.

"Mason is a big softie, especially when I take him to the park. He wants to play with everyone and loves interacting with other dogs."

Earlier this year, Colin also entered his beloved pet into the Dogue de Bordeaux rehoming and rescue show, where he came runner-up.

He said: "I never envisioned being the type of person who would do something like this when I owned a dog.

"I get told about these events and it is a spur of the moment thing if I decide to enter Mason into them.

"I have been told about a dog show in December but I am still unsure as to whether I will enter."

The Dogue de Bordeaux is one of the most ancient French breeds and is claimed to have the largest head in the canine world.

Mason came from a litter of 14 pups and was the biggest out of his siblings.

Colin, who also has a puppy, Ruby, said: "It is true what they say, a dog is a man's best friend. Mason is fantastic to have around and I am very pleased he has been chosen for the calendar – at least my Christmas presents are sorted."
