SUNDAY is deemed to be the day of rest but these kind-hearted volunteers are rolling up their sleeves for business.
Organisers of the Grimsby Food Kitchen will soon revert back to their old ways, by dishing up a treat at weekends once again.
The kitchen, based at the East Marsh Open Door centre, in Hainton Avenue, currently serves food to the area's homeless and socially excluded every Friday.
However, Cath and Ken Homewood, who run it, realised just how important Sunday mealtime was to those who used it.
Cath said: "We use to serve up food every Sunday but it eventually got far too busy for us.
"We had people coming in for meals with children and we could not afford to feed them.
"The kitchen relies on donations from the public to keep running but we were not getting enough at the time to help so many people.
"This is why we decided to change our day to a Friday."
The couple's helping hand on a weekend means more than just a bellyful of food to users.
For Roy Sari, of Grimsby, it was a way for him to get off the streets, if only for a few hours.
The 45-year-old said: "I was homeless when they used to run the kitchen on a Sunday so for me, it was a place to go to keep warm.
"I now have a flat, but that does not make the weekends any less boring when every other business and facility closes in the area. Having the Sunday service will give people like myself somewhere to socialise while enjoying a delicious meal at the same time."
Peter Whittaker, 32, of Freeman Street, said there is a need for the kitchen to be open on a weekend.
"There is nothing to do on a Sunday," he said. "Nowhere is open.
"Harbour Place, on Albert Street West, Grimsby, provides food throughout the week, which is great, but it closes at the weekend.
"I am on benefits and by the time I have paid my house bills, I have nothing left for food.
"Cath and Ken's help is great and their food is fantastic.
"I am looking forward to them opening back up on a Sunday."
Cath is appealing to the public for any donations to help them continue this vital service.
She said: "In order for us to maintain our meals on a Sunday we are going to need as much financial support as possible. The kitchen has been running for seven years and it would be a shame to lose that."
The Sunday service will replace the Friday service from next week, on October 28, and is open for tasty treats at lunchtime at Open Door.
