QUICK-THINKING police officers saved the life of a man when he attempted to jump off the Humber Bridge.
The incident on Friday, October 12, resulted in the closure of the busy northbound carriageway of the bridge, as reported.
Roads around the bridge came to a standstill as the emergency services dealt with the situation, shortly before 3.30pm.
The police were called to the bridge by the concerned girlfriend of a man who had contacted her in a distressed state and stated he was intending to take his own life.
The man at risk had climbed to the outside of the railings on the mid-span of the bridge.
A specialist team of police negotiators was called in.
At 4.30pm, the man made a determined effort to jump but officers caught him.
Following a struggle, they held on to him, securing him with handcuffs and a belt to the railings, while additional support was summoned.
Officers took it in turn to hold him in place through the railings.
Shortly after 5.30pm, he was recovered and taken to hospital.
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Donald said: "This man's life was saved by quick thinking and brave police officers. They could have been pulled over themselves and had to hang on.
"The man was over the railings and while using belts and handcuffs to secure him to the bridge, their initiative and bravery is commendable.
"The priority of all those involved was safety."
