TENANTS of run-down beach chalets in Cleethorpes will be told to improve their appearance or give up the lease.
A meeting of North East Lincolnshire Council's Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Panel heard at least 16 of the Meridian Road chalets are in a "poor state of repair" – including one owned by NELC.
Of the 53 huts still standing, three are owned by the council, with the rest rented out on 60 year leases for a ground rent of £5 per annum.
There are also eight concrete bases where huts have been demolished – three of which are NELC-owned.
A report given to councillors stated: "A number of the day chalets have fallen into a state of disrepair over the years and many appear to be unused.
"There is a need to improve the appearance of the day chalets and bring them back into use by enforcing the covenants within the leases."
However, the meeting heard Balfour Beatty had quoted £12,000 for bringing one chalet up to standard, which NELC had ruled "did not present good value for money".
Wendy Fisher, service manager for assets, said the cost was because the chalets are brick built and require "significant structural work".
She added it was hoped the council could team up with construction students from the Grimsby Institute to work with tenants.
She said: "Our immediate vision is to improve the condition of some of the chalets that have gone into a poor state of disrepair.
"We have had an expression of interest from the Grimsby Institute to work with their construction curriculum department, and we feel that is one worth exploring."
However, when contacted by the Grimsby Telegraph, a spokesman for the Institute said no firm plans were in place and the matter had simply been mentioned "in passing".
