POTHOLES drive motorists crazy... so it's no surprise that one road in North East Lincolnshire has been given a prompt makeover – after developing 71 cavernous craters.

The council were quick off the mark to remedy the problem on a residential street in Healing. Within 24 hours of it being reported, workers were on site and patching things up.

Resident Paul Fieldgate counted no fewer than 71 potholes within a fifth of a mile while trying to negotiate Poplar Road on his bicycle.

He said: "The surface has deteriorated since Christmas. I know there have been similar problems all over the borough, but here seems to deteriorate quite quickly, and this is the worst I have ever seen it."

So far, about 70 per cent of the potholes on the road have been filled in, and this week, other roads, including Westwood Road, in Healing, have been subject to repairs.

And residents are continuing to be urged to log a report of any potholes to North East Lincolnshire Council.

As reported, within days of first turning to the public to spot the pots, NELC had received more than 120 calls – three times the number they would normally expect.

Jason Longhurst, head of development at the authority, said: "We would like to thank the public for taking the time to report the potholes they have observed on the network.

"Our teams are now busy responding to these reports and organising the appropriate response based on this and other information they have collected from their inspections.

Councillor Peter Wheatley, portfolio holder for regeneration and environment, said: "The reporting of potholes by residents plays a crucial role in our road safety programme and I would encourage motorists and cyclists to contact us with information."
