TABLE tennis aces from Grimsby have stormed to Senior British League glory – in just their second season.
Grimsby Mariners, who joined the league thanks to support from the Grimsby Telegraph, have lifted the Division 4 North title.
They topped the eight-team league by two points – with eight wins, four draws and two defeats – to earn promotion into the Division 3 North.
The Mariners' squad of six includes one teenager and three players aged 24 and under.
Coach John Bray said: "The improvement by every player over the season has led to this remarkable achievement.
"The players have put everything into their training and I'm privileged and proud to be coaching such a talented and genuinely nice squad.
"If they continue to improve as they have been doing, we will be very hopeful of performing well in the next tier.
"Winning the title has made us all very proud. Hopefully it will inspire more of the young table tennis players in Grimsby.
"It was a tremendous team effort and, amongst those, some excellent individual performances."
Sean Ward, pictured above, finished joint top in the division's averages, with 92.31 per cent, after losing just two matches all season – and those defeats were both close, over five sets.
Bray said: "He beat the player who finished equal with him twice – an absolutely amazing achievement from an outstanding talent."
The coach added: "Both myself and the players would like to thank those who have supported us. Without their help, this would not have been possible."
