A POPULAR fish and chip shop is being restored to its former glory following a five-month closure.

The owner of The Seaway, in Alexandra Road, Cleethorpes, hopes the restaurant and takeaway will reopen in February after investing tens of thousands of pounds into transforming the 110-year-old building.

Sadit Sabir has doubled the seating capacity to 180 and restored old features of the building, which is in a conservation area.

Mr Sabir said: "I want the shop to be the best in North East Lincolnshire and beyond.

"We are right at the entrance of Cleethorpes and we want to represent the town well.

"It shows visitors there is important investment going on and that the resort has a lot to offer.

"It was in a really bad condition, it looked tired and was falling apart. We are in a conservation area and next to a listed building. It is so important to keep our historical buildings."

He took on the popular venue two years ago but closed it in October.

During the closure, the original slate roof has been restored, as have the gables and murals on the front of the building.

North East Lincolnshire Council's conservation team were so pleased with the work they have asked for more of the brick work to be shown above the sign than before – which Mr Sabir has agreed to.

The layout of the inside has also changed, with part of the takeaway being extended into the old Seafront News shop next door.

The shop's front will show more of the old brick work and the interior will be traditional.

Mr Sabir continued: "I am really looking forward to it reopening and welcoming our customers. I am so proud of what we have achieved.

"When we first closed and the work started it was frightening, but now it is really taking shape.

"Cutting corners is not in my nature, I believe you have to get it right first time and I know we have got it right here."

The opening date is yet to be confirmed, but the opening hours will remain the same as before. The takeaway will be open 11am to 11pm and the restaurant will be open from 11am to 8pm.
